Where does the emoji statistics data come from?

All data is sourced from the Unicode Consortium's official emoji-test.txt file and CLDR annotations. Our database includes all 3,953 fully-qualified emojis from Unicode Emoji 17.0.

What does 'fully-qualified' mean in the emoji count?

A fully-qualified emoji includes all required variation selectors and modifiers for proper rendering. For example, red heart with VS16 is fully-qualified, while red heart without VS16 is not. We count only fully-qualified sequences.

Which category has the most emojis?

Smileys & Emotion and People & Body are typically the largest categories. The exact counts are shown in the category distribution chart on the stats page.

How have emoji counts grown over the years?

The emoji set has grown from 722 emojis in Emoji 1.0 (2015) to 3,953 in the latest version. The version timeline chart shows how many new emojis were added in each release.

What are ZWJ sequences and why are there so many?

ZWJ (Zero Width Joiner) sequences combine multiple emoji with an invisible U+200D character to form new emoji. Family emojis, profession emojis, and many skin-tone combinations are ZWJ sequences. They account for roughly 15-20% of all emojis.
