names, their categories, what they mean, and how they look across platforms. Each round presents a question and a set of multiple-choice answers, and you score points for each correct response.

Whether you consider yourself an emoji expert or just want a fun way to learn, the quiz adapts to challenge you appropriately. You might be surprised how many emojis you recognize visually but cannot name precisely — or vice versa.

How to Start a Quiz

Open /tools/quiz/ and click Start Quiz. A new round begins immediately with your first question.

No account is required. Your current-session score is tracked in the interface, and you can restart or take a new quiz at any time.

Question Types

The quiz includes several question formats to keep things varied:

Name That Emoji

An emoji is displayed large in the center of the screen. You are given four possible names and must select the correct official Unicode name.

Example:

What is the official name of this emoji? 🤌 - A. Pinched Fingers - B. Italian Hand - C. Finger Snap - D. OK Gesture

The correct answer is Pinched Fingers (U+1F90C). Many people call it "Italian Hand" colloquially, but the official Unicode name is different — which is exactly the kind of nuance the quiz highlights.

Which Category?

An emoji is shown and you must identify which Unicode category it belongs to.

Example:

Which category does 🦋 belong to? - A. Smileys & Emotion - B. Food & Drink - C. Animals & Nature - D. Activities

Answer: Animals & Nature.

Emoji by Description

A description or common meaning is given, and you select which emoji it matches.

Example:

Which emoji is commonly used to represent "good luck" or "four-leaf clover"? - A. 🌿 - B. 🍃 - C. 🍀 - D. 🌱

Answer: 🍀 Four Leaf Clover.

Unicode Version

You are shown an emoji and asked which version of the Unicode Emoji Standard introduced it.

Example:

In which emoji version was 🥑 Avocado introduced? - A. Emoji 1.0 - B. Emoji 3.0 - C. Emoji 5.0 - D. Emoji 13.0

Answer: Emoji 3.0 (released in 2016).

Scoring and Progress

Each correct answer adds points to your current score. A progress bar shows how many questions remain in the current round. After the final question, your total score is displayed with a breakdown:

  • Questions answered correctly
  • Questions answered incorrectly
  • Time taken (if time mode is enabled)

You can immediately start a new round with fresh questions.

Tips for Doing Well

Learn Official Names

The biggest surprise for most quiz takers is that many emojis have official Unicode names that differ from their popular nicknames. Some examples:

Common Nickname Official Unicode Name
"Crying laughing" 😂 Face with Tears of Joy
"Skull" 💀 Skull
"Italian hand" 🤌 Pinched Fingers
"Side eye" 🫤 Face with Diagonal Mouth
"Grimace" 😬 Grimacing Face
"Shrug" 🤷 Person Shrugging

Spending a few minutes browsing the emoji index on EmojiFYI before taking the quiz will sharpen your recall for official names.

Know Your Categories

The Unicode emoji standard groups emojis into 10 categories. If you know which category an emoji belongs to, you can rule out wrong answers quickly:

  1. Smileys & Emotion
  2. People & Body
  3. Animals & Nature
  4. Food & Drink
  5. Travel & Places
  6. Activities
  7. Objects
  8. Symbols
  9. Flags
  10. Component

Study the Rare Emojis

The quiz sometimes features less common emojis that most people rarely use. Spend a few minutes browsing categories like Activities, Symbols, and Objects to familiarize yourself with emojis outside the top 50 most used.

Challenge a Friend

After completing a round, share your score with a friend and challenge them to beat it. Because questions are drawn from the full Unicode emoji set of 3,900+ characters, no two rounds are identical — making repeat challenges meaningful.

What You Learn From the Quiz

Beyond pure entertainment, the quiz is a genuinely useful learning experience:

  • Official naming conventions — important if you ever reference emoji in copy, code, or accessibility descriptions
  • Category membership — helps you find emojis faster when browsing
  • Emoji version history — gives context for when and why certain emojis were added
  • Platform awareness — some questions include platform comparison elements, reinforcing that the same emoji can look different depending on the device

After the Quiz: Keep Exploring

When a quiz question catches your attention, follow up:

  • Click the emoji to open its full detail page and read encoding data, platform images, and related emojis
  • Use the Emoji Keyboard to copy any emoji you discovered in the quiz
  • Check the Compare tool to see how a newly discovered emoji looks on Apple, Google, and Samsung
  • Read the Emoji Stats Dashboard to see usage patterns and Unicode version breakdowns

The quiz is designed to make learning about emoji feel like play rather than study. Take a round whenever you want a few minutes of low-stakes fun that leaves you slightly more emoji-literate than before.
