The release version in which an emoji was first introduced, following an annual release cadence since Emoji 4.0 (2016).
Emoji versions track when specific emoji were added to the standard. Starting from Emoji 1.0 (2015), new versions have been released roughly annually. Each version adds new emoji characters and sometimes new sequence mechanisms.Emoji versions are synchronized with but separate from Unicode versions. For example, Emoji 15.0 was released alongside Unicode 15.0. The emoji-test.txt file marks each emoji with its version number.
As of 2024, the latest is Emoji 16.0 with 3,781 total emoji. Version numbers help developers and platforms know which emoji are available and when they were added.
